Why We Stopped Using Sulfate Shampoos (And What We Use Instead)

If you've ever washed your hair and felt that squeaky-clean feeling afterward — the kind that almost squeaks when you run your fingers through it — that's not your hair being clean. That's your hair being stripped.
That squeaky sensation is the sound of sulfates doing their job a little too well. And for those of us with natural, coily, or moisture-sensitive hair, it's one of the worst things we can do to our strands.
At IrvMika, we made the decision early on: no sulfates. Ever. Here's why — and what we use instead.
What Are Sulfates, and Why Are They in Shampoo?
Sulfates — most commonly sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) — are surfactants. That's a fancy word for a cleansing agent that attracts both water and oil, allowing dirt and buildup to be rinsed away.
They're cheap, they lather beautifully, and they're in the majority of drugstore shampoos. The problem? They don't discriminate. They strip away the dirt and the sebum (your scalp's natural oil), and the moisture your hair desperately needs to stay healthy.
For straight hair types, this can cause dryness and frizz. For natural, coily, and kinky hair — hair that already has a harder time retaining moisture because of its curl pattern — sulfates can be genuinely damaging over time.
What Sulfates Do to Natural Hair
Here's what consistent sulfate use looks like in real life:
- Chronic dryness. Your scalp overproduces oil to compensate for what the sulfates strip away, creating a cycle of oily roots and dry ends.
- Breakage. Hair that's consistently stripped of moisture becomes brittle and prone to snapping — especially at the ends and edges.
- Scalp irritation. Sulfates are known irritants. If your scalp is itchy, flaky, or sensitive after washing, your shampoo may be the culprit.
- Color fade. For color-treated hair, sulfates accelerate fading by opening the hair cuticle and letting pigment escape with every wash.
- Product buildup cycle. Stripped hair reaches for moisture through heavy butters and creams — which then require harsher cleansing to remove — creating a loop that's hard to break.
What We Use Instead
Every shampoo in the IrvMika line is formulated sulfate-free, paraben-free, and vegan. Instead of harsh detergents, we build our cleansers around ingredients that work with your hair's natural biology.
Our Aloe + Chamomile Moisturizing Shampoo uses aloe vera as a base — a natural humectant that draws moisture into the hair shaft while it cleanses. Chamomile calms the scalp and adds natural shine without weighing strands down. It cleans without the strip.
For those who love the nourishing power of goat milk, our Goat Milk Hydrating Shampoo is a customer favorite. Goat milk is rich in lactic acid, which gently exfoliates the scalp and removes buildup while its natural fats replenish moisture at the same time. The result? Hair that feels clean and hydrated — not tight and dry.
Cleansing Is Just the Beginning
Switching to a sulfate-free shampoo is the first step. But keeping moisture in your hair after washing is where the real work happens.
We always recommend following your wash with our Aloe + Chamomile Moisturizing Conditioner to restore slip and softness, then sealing with a lightweight oil like our Castor + Rosemary Nourishing Hair Oil. For extra moisture on wash day, our Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner with Neem and Pumpkin Seed locks in hydration before you style.
This is the foundation of a healthy wash day routine — cleanse gently, condition deeply, seal intentionally.
How Long Does It Take to See a Difference?
Most people notice a difference within 2–3 wash days. Your scalp will stop overproducing oil once it realizes it doesn't need to compensate for being stripped. Your ends will feel softer. Breakage will reduce.
The first wash or two might feel different — less of that squeaky lather — but give your hair time to adjust. What you're feeling isn't your hair being less clean. It's your hair holding onto what it needs.
