How To Transition Naturally To Curly or Kinky Hair

During the transition naturally to curly or kinky hair, many of the same questions and concerns arise. Like, how long is the transition period, how often should you wash, and does your hair break off while transitioning?

True enough, these are great questions and we’ll discuss each in detail in this article. But before the juicy stuff, we must get a clear understanding of what curly or kinky hair is to clear up some of the confusion.

Curly or Kinky Hair

Curly hair is a hairstyle that definitely splits opinion. Most of the time, it gets a lot of flak for being hard to manage, but it’s actually a blessing in disguise. Sure, it might not be as simple as wash and go, but there are plenty of benefits of curly hair that those with straight locks don’t have.

Is There A Difference Between Curly and Kinky Hair?

Kinky hair is curly hair. When people talk about "transitioning" to kinky hair, they are talking about transitioning between straight hair and curly hair.

Kinky hair is beautiful and versatile. It can be worn in a variety of styles from braids to twists to afros to bantu knots to cornrows. You can wear your hair as is with a little oil moisturizer and you're good to go!

If you are looking for a new look, however, you can find a wide variety of fun and interesting styles for kinky or curly hair.

The Two Strand Twist

For instance, do the two strand twist method. This is one of the easiest ways of styling kinky hair.

Take a small section of your hair, divide it in half, and then twist the two pieces together until one strand becomes one twisted strand. Repeat this process throughout all of your hair, and what’s really cool, you can use this style with or without extensions.

Dreadlocks

Try dreadlocks!  Dreadlocks are a great way to wear kinky hair! Wash and condition your hair, then separate into sections. Back comb each section until it locks up on itself.

Then wrap a rubber band around the base and repeat throughout your entire head. Or if you'd like an easier method, you can use synthetic dreadlock extensions which come in myriad colors.

When using these extensions, simply braid or twist them into your own natural hair at the scalp level and secure them with rubber bands or clips at the ends of each dread.

How do you survive the transition phase when switching to kinky or curly hair?

In the transition period, your hair may look like straw, and it could take 6 months before you see results. You can use a gentle shampoo, but make sure you don't use too much!

If you go out in public, try putting a hat on your head, as people tend to underestimate the amount of volume you'll lose. Don't brush your hair until it gets long enough to style again. Your hair will look best when it's about 2 inches long.

How long does it take to transition to natural curly hair?

When you start growing out your current hair, your hair begins to change slowly and then after about six months, you'll notice that your hair is changing. At first, you may see your hair growing softer and smoother.

But then it becomes thicker and starts to grow darker in color. As your hair grows, it gets fuller and heavier. This is normal.

However, there are ways you can make this process easier and quicker. You should avoid products that contain alcohol or harsh chemicals. Instead, use mild shampoo and conditioner made especially for curly hair.

Use a wide tooth comb instead of regular combs, and use a brush that is designed specifically for curly hair.

How often should you wash kinky/curly hair?

Kinky hair can be washed about once a week, but can be washed more frequently as long as you use a natural shampoo and conditioner.

If you have very curly hair then you may need to use a leave in conditioner that will keep your hair soft and manageable. If you want to treat kinky hair with a product, make sure the product does not contain silicones, which may make the hair frizzy and damage the ends.

Does your hair break off when transitioning to curly hair?

It depends on how much damage you have already done to your hair. If you've been straightening your hair for a long time, then yes, your hair may break off.

If you're just trying to get used to your new style, then no, you won't lose any hair. If you don't like the look, just go back to the old way. Expect your hair to grow out naturally within 6 months.
